On Wednesday November 20, 2002, John Morgridge visited the Cisco Networking Academy at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN). The Academy program at the CCSN is part of their effort to strengthen the local economy and attract more technology firms to the state.
John Morgridge's visit was part of a celebration of success on this partnership. Other distinguished guests included the Honorable Lorraine T. Hunt, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Nevada, State Senator Ray Rawson and Dr. Ron Remington, President, CCSN.
In recognizing CCSN's training programs, Morgridge said that education and the Internet were made for each other and each needs the other for nations to communicate, educate and prosper economically with one another. He cited a recent U.S. Department of Labor study, which highlighted that the computer industry continues to register the fastest wage and salary employment growth among all industries. Senator Ray Rawson agreed, citing a Cisco study that found the demand for computer engineers, computer support specialists, systems analysts and database administrators to grow by nearly 100 percent over the next five years.
Six CCSN Cisco students also shared the stage and the limelight along with Chairman Morgridge at the event. Singled out for their efforts to succeed in CCSN's rigorous four semester Cisco training, the students included soon-to-graduate Tyrone Banks, an engineering technology major employed in CCSN's Communications Department; Ruth Gonzales, a sophomore at Pahrump Valley High School enrolled in Cisco's high school Academy program; Lori Hiltz, a student graduating soon with a computing degree and working toward a network engineering career; Calvin Hooks, a former student government president and certified Cisco instructor at CCSN; Javier Olarte, another upcoming computing graduate who will pursue a four-year degree at UNLV; and computer technician Victoria Pepin, a Cisco graduate looking to become a senior network administrator.
Cisco's partnership with CCSN engineering and technology (ET) department has resulted in the establishment of a successful Cisco Regional training site. The ET department has trained, certified and aided faculty in setting up over 17 Cisco Networking Academies in CCSN colleges and high schools in Clark, Lincoln and Nye counties. This fall semester, there are 333 students enrolled in CCNA courses and 42 students enrolled in CCNP courses at the CCSN Cheyenne, Henderson and Western High Tech Center campuses. Since the program's launch, more than 2,000 students received CCNA degrees and 47 have graduated with CCNP degrees from the three CCSN campuses.
