| The GLN Services Manager (GLN
SM) is an application that enables the implementation and support
of technology solutions for the Networking Academy e-learning
environment, as well as providing tools and resources. The data
center and support staff at the network operations center assist
Networking Academies by analyzing network topology and performance
at the local area network (LAN) level to ensure to efficient
operation of GLN. GLN SM offers distinct services to assist
the Networking Academies, such as monitoring network performance,
trace routes, downloadable tools, documentation, network topology
case studies, installation resources, plus troubleshooting and
support.
GLN Services Manager includes the management and storage
of various asset and site surveys for network optimization
and implementation of new technologies within the Cisco Networking
Academy Program.
The site surveys within the GLN Services Manager are in
place to accomplish the following tasks:
The general site survey gathers information about the
basic aspects of curriculum delivery within each Networking Academy. Information such
as computer platforms, operating systems, and browsers assist Cisco in ongoing
curriculum development.
The asset survey provides the Services Manager with information
regarding GLN-specific assets. An asset is a piece of networked equipment
used in delivery of Cisco curriculum, that may communicate with the GLN Services
Manager. As an example, if the Networking Academy has a Web server asset,
the Academy would complete the Web server survey.
The Services Manager also collects specific data regarding
the Academy assets for the Academy implementation of any network-reliant optional
offerings within the Cisco Networking Academy Program. Examples of these offerings
include NetLabs and More Info, both of which require the completion of the
applicable GLN SM Site Survey and require ongoing interaction with and support
of the GLN SM.
The Services Manager is home to network monitoring tools,
such as ping, trace route, and network performance monitoring. Upon completion of the general
site survey, each Academy can receive monthly reports detailing their network performance,
which can be compared to historical ping charts stored in the Services Manager.
Tools to diagram Academy network topology, including Fluke's
LAN MapShot and the Cisco Network Designer, are available for download from the Services
Manager. Helpful checklists, guides, and animated network
topology case studies are available for use in optimizing
Academy networks.
Lastly, the Services Manager is the support center for optional
offerings, such as NetLabs and More Info. In addition to the resources listed above, the
Services Manager provides users with information to support overall network troubleshooting activities
at the Academy. Examples include an online support guide for opening CCO cases, various
installation guides, and checklists and an email link to Services Manager staff.
