Together with its strategic partners, UNDP and USAID/Leland, Cisco
announced its goal to establish the Academy Program in at least half
of the world's 49 Least Developed Countries by end of 2001. The Academy
program will help build human capacity in the LDCs by training local
people to design, build and maintain information and communication
technologies. This program is designed to facilitate sustainable development
in the LDCs and accelerate their progress and full integration into
the world economy. The initial goal has been met and now Academies
have been established in 33 LDCs. Cisco will continue to work with
its partners to further expand the program and build capacity within
LDCs and to bridge the digital divide.
Local Goals
The goal is to use the initial program as the core of a
larger development program adapted to the needs of each
country. The partners will strive to expand the program
within each country by demonstrating the relevance of information
and communications technology (ICT) for development.
Instructor Goals
Academies are encouraged to send two instructors for training
to provide support for one another and to ensure that if
one person leaves the organization, the Academy will remain.
In addition to teaching classes, instructors assist students in their coursework, recruit new students, and provide support for the program.
Participant Goals
UNITeS and UNV will use their volunteer programs and area
experts to support all phases of the LDC initiative at local
levels. All strategic partners will support recruitment
of individuals from all socioeconomic levels and promote
gender equity in all aspects of the Academy program.
