Cisco Systems, Inc. and the Cisco Learning Institute (CLI), recognizing the current gender gap in the Information Technology (IT) field, partnered in April 2000 and developed the Gender Initiative project. This initiative seeks ways to increase females’ access to IT training and career opportunities, beginning with the Cisco Networking Academy™ Program. The Cisco Networking Academy Program presents an excellent opportunity to help narrow the gender gap and increase female participation in the Internet economy.
Cisco and CLI are working with Networking Academies worldwide to collect and disseminate information on best practice recruitment and retention strategies.
The Internet Training Center (ITC) Initiative focuses on the establishment of gender-focused Networking Academies in the world’s Least Developed Countries, with an institution committing to a minimum of 30% female enrollment. As part of the Gender Equal Access in Technology project, Cisco and CLI are working with targeted secondary schools in the U.S. to achieve gender equity in the Academy program.
