Details and Data
At some point you'll want answers to questions:
How many people completed the training?
How many of them passed their certification?
If they didn't complete the training, why not?
Have any patterns emerged for success or failure?
What are program improvements based on?
Why should funding for this program continue?
Success stories and qualitative documentation tell a story, but
there is strength in data. Whether positive or negative, numbers
speak louder than words. During the planning stage, identify the
data you need and prepare forms and systems to collect that information.
The application form or simple data sheet collects information before
students begin. In addition to name, address, telephone; some Networking
Academies ask about childcare, marital status, ethnicity, employment
history, income, substance abuse history, criminal convictions,
and home computer access. For marketing purposes, Networking Academies
ask how an applicant heard about the program.
By recording this information in a database or a spreadsheet, Networking
Academies track success, failure, demographics, and changes, to
paint an increasingly detailed picture.
The information gathered should measure the ability of the program
to meet its goals. If the complete picture shows the student employed,
then the tracking system needs to maintain contact with students
after CCNA 4.
Why gather data?
- to strengthen funding requests with real, measurable results.
- to justify additional funding for support services.
- to publicize success in a news release or news story.
- to improve the program with an evaluation of its strengths and
weaknesses.
