Fundamentals of UNIX, ® Sponsored by Sun Microsystems

This course teaches students how to use the UNIX operating system and introduces them to the CDE, GNOME, and KDE graphical user interfaces (GUI). An overview of the Sun Solaris and Linux versions of the UNIX operating system is provided. The class is for new users of the UNIX operating environment. Students will learn fundamental command-line features of UNIX including file system navigation, changing file permissions, the vi and emacs text editors, Korn and Bash shell features, and basic network use. GUI features include Application Managers, File Managers, Text Editors, printing, and mail.

This course along with IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems will prepare students for the CompTIA Linux+ certification exam. The Fundamentals of UNIX along with additional Sun Microsystems’ courses will help prepare students for the Sun Sys Admin I certification exam.

In combination with IT Essentials II, the UNIX course will help prime students for career opportunities such as network analyst, programmer/analyst, systems analyst, website developer, and data modeling specialist. For higher education bound students, this course will help ready them to enter in to a computer science or a management information systems degree program.

This course is scheduled to be retired on July 1, 2006. The curriculum and assessments will be available until that time. Please see the Sun Sponsorship Transition FAQs for further details on this curriculum retirement.
